When they were all down, all destroyed, and he was covered in blood, his hands skinned and aching, his face tender from a few lucky shots, Eben allowed himself to relax.

That had felt good. Well, the last part, anyway, the part where he got to tell them what he really thought of them, and then got to tear them apart. The part where he had spent two weeks pretending to be Charles Raney, who was such an absolute waste of skin that he would plead to be allowed to join an assemblage of vapid sheep—that part had been hard.

But killing them? Oh, that was easy. That was good. He had done it to a couple of cells since leaving Enok’s place in Norway. Perhaps this was becoming a macabre kind of hobby.

It had to be tonight, too, before the nursing home attack. Andy Gray’s call had hastened it a little, that was all. Pushed up the schedule.

Of course, Stella wouldn’t call herself. He didn’t know if it was pride or stubbornness, or what. He should be accustomed to it, after all this time.

She needed him. But in a new twist, apparently she needed someone else to tell him so.

Well, there was nothing keeping him in Kansas now. Nothing at all.

Sometimes they fought, but when the love of his life needed him, there was nothing that would stand in his way.
